A “secret thief” has delivered a suspicious Christmas card to an unsuspecting couple, confessing to have been routinely stealing from them.

The pair, in Sydney’s inner west, received the note in their letterbox on Monday and later shared a photo of it to social media, where they asked if anyone else had received one similar.

“Dear neighbour, Merry Christmas,” the card, written with a black marker, said.

“In this time of Christmas spirit, I’d like to thank you for letting me steal from your house occasionally without calling the police,” they wrote.

“Love, your secret thief.”

One commenter on the social media post described the card as “really disturbing” – which several others agreed with.

Someone else said the letter was “truly creepy”.

“Spooky. That would freak me out,” another wrote.

The thief was both criticised and commended for their penmanship, with one applauding their grammar and another taking issue with their messy handwriting.

“A crim with a keen sense for punctuation and spelling,” one responded.

“Only crime there is how awful the writing is,” another said.

Some commenters encouraged the couple to invest in a cheap security camera to catch out any future robbery attempts.

“So creepy. I’d get a camera or two. They’re cheap,” one wrote.

Meanwhile others were convinced the couple would have noticed if items were taken from their home.

“This is a bit strange. I think you would know if someone was ‘stealing from your house occasionally’,” someone said.
