A swimmer remains missing in Byron Bay after two people saw him struggling offshore.
A search will continue off the coast of Main Beach where the man vanished in the surf about 5.30pm on Wednesday.
A 22-year-old man tried to assist the swimmer but became “overwhelmed” by the surf conditions.
Local police, NSW Ambulance, Surf Life Saving, Fire and Rescue NSW, Marine Rescue and Queensland Polair personnel all attended the scene and searched for the swimmer for three hours.

With no sign of the missing man, the search was suspended at 8.30pm.
Personal items have been located on the beach.
There have been no reports of anyone missing to indicate the identity of the swimmer.
The search will resume at 7am on Thursday.
