A 16-year-old L-plater has been charged after allegedly hitting and killing a pedestrian while driving alone.

The Melbourne boy has been placed in remand and was charged with dangerous driving causing death and learner driver unaccompanied. He will appear at children’s court on Friday.

Police will allege the teenager was driving a gold Toyota Camry when he mounted a kerb and struck a 29-year-old pedestrian on the footpath. The man later died at the scene.

The incident happened on Taylors Rd in the northwest Melbourne suburb of Keilor Downs at about 5.35am on Tuesday.

Victorian law states 16-year-olds can only drive under the supervision of a full licence holder and can only apply for a probationary licence once they’re 18.
