Two horses have defied death in a daring escape, crossing tram lines and a busy highway after escaping a racing promotion event on the Gold Coast.

The two animals were being ridden along The Esplanade at Surfers Paradise for the Magic Millions event on Tuesday morning when they became loose, with initial reports a jockey had been thrown.

The bolted towards traffic and residential areas, crossing tramline tracks, before being captured more than a kilometre up the Gold Coast Highway.

Surreal images showed the horses, still wearing their racing saddle cloths, walking down a residential street, passing houses and cars.

Initial reports suggest the horses were unharmed.

The Magic Millions carnival begins with a public event, where onlookers line the beach to watch top jockeys and celebrities alike hold mock races along the famous glitter strip.

The race determines the barrier draw for the Magic Millions race, which will be held at the Gold Coast Turf Club on Saturday.

It’s understood the incident came as the last three horses were racing.
