Drivers on Sydney’s M5 have been warned to allow plenty of extra travel time after a horrific multi-car crash.

Four cars and a motorbike were caught in the collision, with police called to the scene about 6.15am.

All westbound lanes of the highway in Padstow, approaching Fairford Road, were closed, with the crash also impacting city-bound traffic, which has slowed as a result.

Just after 7am, two lanes had reopened to allow cars to pass the crash site, but traffic is moving no faster than 40km/h.

According to Live Traffic NSW, traffic remains heavy for a roughly 13-kilometre stretch between Moorebank and Beverley Hills.

A single car crash further west on the M5 has added to the Monday morning chaos.

Crew are onsite after a single car crashed into a tree at the offramp to the Hume Highway just before 7am.
